Swinging with a bit of Latin groove, "Comes Love" sung by Melissa Fogarty @Drom - English with Yiddish interludes.
Fab horn solos! Pam Fleming: trumpet, Reut Regev: trombone, Debra Kreisberg: sax. Metropolitan Klezmer's arrangement (by drummer/bandleader Eve Sicular) interweaves the classic standard with strands from two Yiddish tunes, both "Libes Shmertsn" [Love Pangs] vocal tritone melody & an instrumental interlude from traditional folksong "Shvartse Oygn Hobn Fayer" [Dark Eyes Have Fire]. Sparks of burning yearning fly through the lyrics of all three songs.
"Comes Love" by Lew Brown, Sammy Stept & Charles Tobias was originally made famous by Billie Holiday; we only realized a moment before this April 7, 2009 performance that we were playing on Billie Holiday's birthday too! (Thanks to New York City's WKCR for the broadcast reminder all day.) "Libes Shmertsn" [alternate transliteration Liebes Schmerzen] was written by Joseph Rumshinsky for the 1923 Yiddish musical "Shtarker fun Libe." Metropolitan Klezmer's full-length (instrumental) version of Libes Shmertsn full-length is on our first CD, YIDDISH FOR TRAVELERS; this Yinglish arrangement of "Comes Love" appears as the Klezbonus track on Metropolitan Klezmer's latest disc, TRAVELING SHOW.
METROPOLITAN KLEZMER:
