Talented young British pianist Mark Viner performs Alkan's heart-wrenching funeral march.

All too-rarely performed or heard, this piece perfectly evokes the beating of drums, the grief-stricken cortège and funereal, celestial bells.

Recorded 2010.

  • this is a masterpiece! sad it's so rarely played.

  • @felipesarro I think this piece, interpreted in the right way (whatever that may be), is one of Alkan's most sincere and effective works.

  • Phenomenal performance! Thank so much for the upload. I personally like this tempo and interpretation more than Smith. It truly has a magical touch. Did he also record the counterpart Marche Triomphal?

  • @lexarsepa Thanks and no problem. Unfortunately Mark didn't record the Marche Triomphale, to my knowledge, though I'm sure he would be up to the task!

  • Such a beautiful gem.

  • @felipesarro Brahms 2 is "greater" yes, but I prefer the first. I absolutely adore both though, the second is still in my very top favorites! :D Plus, Brahms 2 is very hard, whereas 1 isn't really that hard for me at all!

  • @OrangeSodaKing Brahms rules! but I prefer Brahms 2.

  • @felipesarro I don't care much for Tchaikovsky either, hehe. My teacher asked me if I wanted to learn the first piano concerto, and I was like "NOOOOO. I want to do Brahms 1 instead!"

  • @Sorcerer88 I don't like Tchaikovsky, that's why I said that. hehe

I think I'm young also. I HOPE I'm still young. hehe

  • @felipesarro i don't know where the prejudice is about worrying about the barely altered repetitions, if anything it's impatience. but i agree it's a great passage and an overwhelming repeat in major, i think what i'm more concerned about is the first theme that is repeated quite often as well. i'm young, so i prefer quick tempos and no repetitions, forgive me ;) by the way, i haven't delved too deeply into tchaikovsky unfortunately, but i like scarlatti's repetitions for example.

  • @Sorcerer88 maybe it's a little prejudice, isn't it? do you like Tchaikovsky and all his excessive repetitions?

I myself love the altered repetitions of 1:40, 3:01 and 8:58, because this is the most beautiful passage of the piece. in my opinion, it truly should be repeated (I'd do it if I was a composer!). it is in Major, so it's like a sunshine in the middle of the funeral.
