Via ferrata systems have been popular for decades in Europe, where over 300 routes are open to the public, but they are relatively new and almost entirely unheard of in North America. They involve the use of permanently installed anchor systems, which provide accessibility to those without technical rock climbing skills.
Our Via Ferrata here at the Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center is unique in many ways. The brainchild of Stuart Hammet, the route was constructed in 2002 by a talented team of North American climbers and riggers. This via ferrata was the second to be built in the United States and one of the first to be built solely by North Americans, many of whom are local Seneca Rocks climbing guides.
