Johann Christian Bach
( 5 .9.1735 in Leipzig - 1.1.1782 in London )

Aria " Frá l'orror´ " from the opera "Carattaco" , first performed on 14. 2.1767 at the King's Theatre in Haymarket, London.

************************************
JOHANN CHRISTIAN BACH , the youngest son of J. S. Bach. He probably studied first under his father, then on his father's death with his half-brother Carl Philipp Emanuel in Berlin. In 1754 he left for Italy and shortly afterwards was appointed as Chapel master to Comte Agostino Litta, who provided him with sufficient means to enable him to continue his music- study under Padre Martini. He converted to Roman Catholic and took a post as organist at Milan Cathedral 1760 .
He also embarked on an operatic career - in 1761, "Artaserse" was presented in Turin, followed by a production in Naples of "Catone in Utica" . One year later, Naples saw the first performance of "Allesandro nell'Indie". These three operas were successful.
He was then invited to compose for the King's Theatre in London, where was produced his first Italian opera for England, " Orione" , on 19. February 1763 . "Orione" ran for three months, and obtained for Bach the position of musicmaster to Queen Charlotte, a post which he kept until his death. 1764 he meet the child-genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart., who was introduced to the Queen's chapel master, and a great affection arose between the two. J.Ch. Bach and W.A. Mozart gave several sonata performances.
He also promoted and played in a prominent concert series with his compatriot and friend C. F. Abel, bringing the newest and best European music to Londoners' notice. Many of his works were published, including songs written for Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. In 1772 and 1774 he visited Mannheim for performances of his operas "Temistocle" and "Lucio Silla"; In1779 he wrote "Amadis de Gaule" for the Paris Opéra. But the success of these works, like that of his London operas, was limited. His popularity faded in the late 1770s, and after financial troubles his health declined, he died at the New Year´s day of 1782, and was soon forgotten.

"My brother lives merely to compose, while I compose merely to live !" - commented once Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

But in comparison to the sorrowful words is the music quite peaceful and almost pastoral. ;-)

  • Lyrics :

(working on a translation in english, french and german)

  • Thank you a lot, my dear!

    Danke, grazie

  • (suite) What a good job, dear Philippe !!! You enchant our days, our life !!! MANY THANKS !!! Bizzz !

Merci.

  • Oh, lucky you to get the CD so early. Well done, Sophie!

Also, it must be wonderful to be able to see PJ in TV programmes.

I am really looking forward to getting the CD and, of course, to his concerts in Tokyo in early November.

  • I guess, you mean the aria " La legge accetto ", which was written by J.-Ch. Bach for insertion into Atto I of Glücks most famous work.

  • very interesting convention!

thank you for the answer :)

  • Perhaps not so strange as a convention of the time: Glück's Orfeo (with "Che faro" written in the same vein) appeared just 5 year earlier than JCB's Carattaco. Interestingly, JCB edited Orfeo for 1770's season in London, adding some music to it.

  • For me it's а very strange contraposition between almost sweet calm music and bitter distressing words. Why?
