Tinnitus is a condition whereby a constant sound is heard in one or both ears and seems to come from the middle of the head and not an external source from outside the body. Therefore it is only the person with the condition that can hear this sound. Sounds of tinnitus usually include a repetitive buzzing, ringing, hissing or whistling noise. Pulsatile tinnitus is a specific form of tinnitus that involves pulsating sounds in the ears, often in tune with a heartbeat. Pulsatile tinnitus is often related to disturbances with the blood flow, and can be heard as whooshing or thumping sounds.

It is often common to experience a temporary form of tinnitus after you have been to a loud music concert for example, or following a cold or mild head injury. However some people may then suffer with the condition on a more permanent basis as the sounds of tinnitus inside the head fail to subside. Tinnitus is more common amongst older people but can still affect you at any age including young children. It tends to worsen when your external surroundings are quieter such as when you are trying to sleep and the sounds of tinnitus in the head become more obvious and severe. This can then lead to insomnia. You may also suffer more when you are tired as the noises will likely decrease your concentration levels. Therefore the condition can ultimately become extremely difficult to live with and can cause anxiety and even depression if you suffer long term.

Tinnitus is often due to an abnormal condition of the ear and can eventually lead to hearing loss which is more common in elderly sufferers. Other causes of tinnitus include exposure to noise, a build up of earwax, head injury, stress, medication such as aspirin, and anaemia. In order to stop tinnitus it is advisable to avoid repeatedly exposing your ears to loud noise as this can increase the chances of earwax building up. If you discover that tinnitus is a result of another condition, treatment can then be more easily defined and the tinnitus should stop. Of course, blocking out the noises with low external sounds or music can temporarily provide relief and distract the attention away from the tinnitus but it is important to establish the underlying cause.
As tinnitus is often difficult for a GP to diagnose if there are no physical symptoms, sufferers are increasingly opting for natural remedies for tinnitus in order to cure the condition including homeopathic remedies for tinnitus and diet. Stress can be a major cause and therefore relaxation techniques have proved successful as these can also help to relieve the frustration and anxiety associated with the condition. It is common for people who suffer from tinnitus to also suffer from depression as it can severely affect everyday life.

Relaxation therapies and exercise can ultimately help to improve your mentality which can then dramatically improve tinnitus. Natural herbs and remedies for natural tinnitus relief, such as gingko biloba, spinach, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds also contain ingredients which help the condition. Diet is an extremely important factor and there are specific foods which worsen the effects of tinnitus. These include salt and dairy products which should always be consumed in moderation. A well balanced diet along with a healthy and fulfilled lifestyle can contribute to tinnitus relief. Here at Megavista, we focus on the positive, holistic approach to effectively treating and preventing the condition.
