ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI (1660-1725)

"Magnificat" for two sopranos, alto, tenor, bass and basso continuo

1. "Magnificat"

2. "Et exulatavit"

3. "Quia respexit"

4. "Fecit potentiam"

Performed by Concerto Italiano
Directed by Rinaldo Alessandrini

*Alessandro Scarlatti was a very backward looking composer. He was not particularily interested in the style of his era, and often looked at the music of the early Baroque and Renaissance for inspiration. This is why he composed alot of madrigals, and focused alot of his sacred music on polyphony.

  • one of my favorite composers, yet I thought he was an innovative composer - did he not popularise the usage of the D.C form and gave increasing emphasis on instrumentation in his operas and sinfonia?

  • Here's the thing: he was innovative but he was not interested in what his contemporaries so much, which is kind of paradoxical I guess.

  • "My" christmas present arrived early! :) Thank you. :)

  • Beautiful isn't it? I love this piece. Very moving. Thank you for commenting!

  • Gorgeous! I love this so much....touches me

  • Thanks to you I just bought this album. I think they should give you royalties or something.

  • The first movement is so powerful. I think the "simplicity" of the music really lets the emotion come through.
