The rod and staff are two of the oldest known martial arts weapons. They are also wonderful tools to help us develop flexibility with the benefit of a small amount of length and weight to also help with strength training. Here are many variations of flexibility exercises with a short staff.

  • Thanks for your comments! The rod and staff are great natural weapons because training translates to anything we can pick up in our hands and use to block or strike defensively. That might be a tree branch, broom, etc. What I like about using the rod and staff for flexibility is that the movements are an extension of the arms and hands, add a little weight to the movement, and work the major joints fluidly. Enjoy your training!

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I need to get in shape, and I use to practice in hanbo, jo and bo staffs. Your vid clips are going to start me working out again. Many Thanks!

  • Seen your Qigong videos, its similar to what I am learning from master Lijun Wang. Good stuff. My focus in martial arts is in hand to hand. I stopped training weapon, I realized that I would never carry a spear or a sword etc with me out on the street. This is just my personal preference. I have respect for those that keep the traditions of weapon alive, but personally dont train in them any more. This is an exercise that I have not considered though.
