wow i had to listen to this song for american music history in college and my CD was skipping so i found it on here. that was really really good. i play piano some, but mostly by ear. and i saw your not using music are you??

Your technique is obviously very good, hence the brilliance of 1:58 (ish) onwards in the right hand. In places it does sounds a bit monotonous and 'mechanic'. Perhaps you should try varying the gradation of tone in places and bits of rubato, maybe. My old teacher, Philip Martin from the Birmingham Conservatoire (UK) recorded all of Gottschalk's works, and his recording of this piece is first class. Get a recording of it if you can.

don't worry, this was a while ago. it's very different now. ;) here i'm just playing the notes.
and yes i have philip martin's complete recordings of gottschalk's piano works. they're wonderful (wish he recorded the solo transcription of the grand tarrantelle however). thanks for you comment
