when you talk about using small and large hand circles (brilliant idea! btw) can you use a large circle but use a faster, more crisp sweep instead of a wide one?

I'm fairly new to judo and I have a basic question: is De Ashi Barai the same thing as De Ashi Harai?

Yes, when most Japanese words that start with an "H" have another word preceding it, the "H" is usually is pronounce as a "B".
