Well, it has some similarities, but as a whole, Irish and Highland are both distinctly different.

Scottish is usually done in sets made up of 2-5 couples. The number of steps used are not that many. Occasionally some "flair" steps are used instead of a traditional setting step. As the dance progresses, each couple is given a chance to be the "first couple" (who are the main characters). In Irish dancing it's more independent high steps/arm movements (think Riverdance). Highland Dancing is the scottish version of the Irish (think sworddance)

Please correct me if I am wrong, but the difference between Irish and Scottish dance seems to be the Irish is more of a high step, kicking and step dancing, Scottish doesn't seem to have the high step involved as much, what are the other differences?

Very true! I love Scottish dancing as well, but Irish is my forte. :)

You are correct on the Scottish bit. Men used to dance the different dances as ways to show their strength to the Clan Chiefs. They would also dance the dances before they went into battle or after a battle was finished.
