The reason you often hear this sung by younger singers at a faster tempo is: Developing singers don't have the breath control to sing it at Hermann Prey's tempo. This is a wonderful version!

Years ago I saw a German TV report on Herman Prey. At home he likes to listen to Bob Dylan.

interessant.....sobald er mal nicht die Obertöne mitnimmmt und hier und da zu offene Vokale singt, wird er sofort zu tief.

niestety jest sporo nieczystych dżwiekow,znam wielkość hermanna ale to nie sa jego najlepsze nagrania,podziwiam,ale niestety nie do końca

@axelmimi : The Warren recording was not made the night he died! He died after singing his aria during a full performance of La Forza del Destino... not a recital, and not Tannhauser!!!
The Wolfram aria was apparently a recital, probably years earlier.

The tempo is not wrong, if the singer can frase that way you can do it.Total poetic, frase by frase, like Klemperer german ideal, no regular subdivision, no metronome at all.
That is German School, tone and fluidity.
I like this version very much.

Herr Prey is much missed. He was a fine artist, who used his warm, beautiful voice very well indeed---
