There is In Ground Effect Hovering (below 50 feet) , and Out of Ground Effect hovering (above 50 feet). Kiowas are heavy for their power and can not always hover when over 50 feet or higher. In a 30km headwind it is still flying 30 kph, but it will stay in place over the surface.
I had seen (or thought I saw) Kiowa's hover, so what was the advisor talking about? I know that is what I heard, because the other radio operator heard the same thing and we looked at each other with raised eyebrows. Any idea's??
Perhaps you can answer my question re: the Kiowa. I was responsible for ground/air radio during the Pope's visit to Moncton (NB, Canada). We had 2 Kiowa's mounted with camera's providing surveillance. There was an incident and the Police asked the Advisor (a Kiowa pilot) if they could return to a certain spot and hover so they could have a long, steady shot with the camera (this was before the gyro-stab cam's). The pilot said no, the Kiowa could only hover in a 30km headwind!!
I started out repairing the Alpha and Charlie models. Then I became an Enlisted Aerial Observer. My heartfelt thanks to all of you that fix them and fly them. Thanks for this great video. Hooah! Air Cav!
