Animation produced using data generated by molecular dynamics simulation of a swollen polyelectrolyte gel, such as the kind of gel used in diapers. Blue particles represent negatively charged monomers that make up the crosslinked network backbone of the gel; white particles are positively charged monovalent ions which are highly mobile; red particles are positively charged divalent ions which are strongly attracted to the polymer network backbone of the gel. The empty space is filled with water. The simulation was performed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison http://www.engr.wisc.edu/groups/mtsm/ . Frames of the animation were rendered using POV-Ray http://www.povray.org/ .
