WONG:
Mongolia confirms that the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party,
has won a majority in Parliament. However, people have mixed feelings about
the election results, which led to violence. Let's take a closer look…
STORY:
Violence erupted following the polls as voters alleged election fraud. However, Mongolian President Nambraryn Enkhbayar called for all parties concerned to acknowledge the results.
[Nambraryn Enkhbayar, President]:
"My point is, that it is necessary to accept the results of the election and call the first session of the newly elected Parliament, Ikh Hural."
The riot in early July killed at least five people and prompted the President to declare a state of emergency.
Some people still are hesitant to accept the current election results.
[Oidoviin Tuul, Mongolian]:
"I didn't like the whole election, it was all faked up.”
But the annual Naadam festival, a hundred-year-old Mongolian tradition, has calmed the
situation down, somewhat. The festive occasion brings Mongolian people together and celebrates the annual pageant of horsemanship, wrestling, and archery -- Mongolia's three manly sports.
[Ochiriin Tserendorj, Mongolian]:
"We had a great Naadam festival, and it brought peace and reconciliation to the people after the events on July 1."
Election recount results are expected in the next few days.
