The Americans said good things about Canadians? That's a shocker.

I may be repeating myself since I said some of these points in the class: I was surprised by how the six environment can shape a company to do business overseas. I liked the gray man's theory which Mr. Bell has told us, especially because I think it makes a lot of sense. (People are generally risk-averse. Energetic VPs that are likely to take risks get voted off the ship).

One of the most important things I learnt was that calm discussions and a grey man approach can work better than AK 47's. Guest speaker Mr. Bell's examples on this topic were extremely insightful. Also, the importance of going global for a company and keeping in mind the six environments while doing so was interesting.
Your personal anecdotes on counter trade, contingency planning etc. kept me entertained!

Very useful class. Most useful things learnt was avoidance of risk, contingency planning and the importance of reading the newspaper. Lectures were fun and informative. Thanks Professor Richardson.

One of the most important things I learned was about contingency planning. Having a backup plan in case something happens is not only trivial in the world of business but also in our personal lives. For instance, I'm going to S. Africa this summer and although the hotels are already booked and confirmed, we still looked for some of my friend's relatives there and arranged to stay with them for a few nights in case something happens and we can't stay at the hotel.

Some important things I learned in this course is about political risks. When a company wants to do business in any country, they need to thoroughly analyze the political situation and the problems that may arise. Moreover, they also need to ensure they have contingency plans in place. Another interesting thing I learned is the defensive and integrative approaches that companies can use to approach risks and their respective pros/cons.

defensive and integrative approaches - yes, a lot of time the integrative approach is best, but when conditions are severe, a defensive approach is best, especially when the company is about to totally withdraw in the near future

I learned something that is relevant to all of us as we live in such a multicultural city. The media tends to emphasize the diverse set of cultures that make up the city of Toronto, rather than celebrate the things that we have in common. Ever since the lecture on cultural diversity, I have learned that although knowledge of our cultural differences is important, at the same time we should always aim to acknowledge and celebrate our similarities.

think of it in terms of sports teams, successful teams always focus on what the players have in common in order to succeed - communities are like that too - successful communities are ones where everyone feels they have a little bit of something in common with the other members
