Omaha Police Thursday released the cruiser videos from the November 2006 high-speed chase of officers in pursuit of Robert Carter, who had held up three businesses.

Carter received 30 years in prison for his crime spree.

Two different dashboard cameras caught the wild pursuit. Omaha Police Officer Matt Rech started in on the chase at 42nd and L and ended up in Carter Lake about 15 minutes later.

A dangerous suspect, at times an even more unbelievable chase as the pursuit weaved in and out of traffic with speeds topping 100 mph. "I believe this party is wanted for armed robbery, he's supposed to be armed with a shotgun," said Officer Rech.

Carter was behind the wheel of a racing SUV and wasn't afraid to use that weapon. "He just shot at me. He's got the shotgun and he just shot at me. Shot through the back window. He is armed and he is firing at me."

And he didn't stop there. "He's got a sawed-off shotgun. It looks like he's reloading. He's looking down at the floorboard, probably getting shells, he just shot at me."

More bullets 30 seconds later as Carter shot while taking the Dodge Street exit at the same time.

"He's got the gun in his hand. He's getting back. He's shooting at me. He's pointing the gun directly at me. He's trying to fire back behind his windshield. I'm not close enough for officer intervention."

After passing by the Qwest Center, Carter turned toward the airport. He then veered off into a city park. "He just ran over a sign," said Omaha Police Officer Steve Martinez in another cruiser. "I'm not sure what road he is on."

Carter kicked up leaves and dust as he hightailed it through Levi Carter Park. He couldn't get away. The officer tried to dodge him and ended up in the water.

"Shots fired, shots fired," said Officer Martinez. After shots rang out, all the adrenaline-filled moments caught on tape came to an end.

It took more than a year for Carter's case to go through court because he was critically injured. He said he wanted to "die that day." Carter even got in trouble behind bars, accused of trying to escape the county jail.

He's now going to serve 30 years in prison, a virtual life sentence for a man in his mid-40s.
