Memphis Belle is a 1990 film directed by Michael Caton-Jones and
written by Monte Merrick, starring Matthew Modine and Eric Stoltz
and introducing Harry Connick Jr. in his screen debut. It is a
fictionalization of the 1943 documentary Memphis Belle: A Story of a
Flying Fortress by director William Wyler, about the 25th and last
mission of an American B-17 bomber, the Memphis Belle, which was
based in England during World War II. The 1990 version was
produced by Wyler's daughter Catherine and dedicated to her father.

  • 7:06 my favorite part. I got to see the Belle at a airshow last year, she was a beauty!

  • @spitfire05211 True, thats why the Captain said "Luke, Shut Up" after he said it.

  • @EinundzwanzigPanzer I have a feeling one of them would have been the Tailgunner, he probably would have fallen out or been able to Bail out. The other I don't know.

  • @SpenzOT Thats interesting, I wonder how that happened.

  • @SpenzOT Note I read this story in a book. I don't even know if it is true or not and I cannot really find any proof of it unlike the B-17 getting cut in half. It was paraphrased from crew member accounts so it is probably heavily embellished.

  • @soeffingwhat I think it had to do with the armored ball turret, the location of the turret in relation to everything else, and a LOT of luck. Quite honestly I don't know how he survived, but odd things have happened, especially with B-17's. There is even a story of a crew putting their 17 on autopilot, bailing out, and then finding out days later that their B-17 landed safely in a british farm field on autopilot without a scratch (other than the battle damage).

  • @SpenzOT Thanks for the Info. I would have expected the Tailgunner to survive (by either falling out or managing to Bail out) but not the Ball-Turret Gunner. Weren't they strapped in and as such unable wear Parachutes in there?

  • @Voinar010 It actually happened though. March 23rd, 1945, the B-17 'Bolster' was hit by flak and hit the B-17 'Ol' Scrapiron' in the mid-section, cutting her in half. The tail-gunner and the Ball turret gunner were the only survivors. The fluttering tail section of the B-17 created enough drag for him to ride it down and a relatively safe speed.

So it happened. Granted it wasn't a 109 that did it but german fighter collisions did happen.

  • Rascal's scream is probably the most convincing scream of terror I have ever heard in a movie. You can literally imagine the terror that can produce a scream so horrible. Just shows how good the acting generally is in this film.

  • @EinundzwanzigPanzer . And when they only see two parachutes from Mother & Country they keep watching it go down in hope of seeing more parachutes, but sadly they dont meaning that the rest of the crew are either killed, passed out, too heavily wounded to jump or simply locked in their positions by large G-forces, which obviously (and sadly) means that they have no chance of survival whatsoever...
