National Museum of the American Indian
Symposium - Friday, November 13, 2009
A part of the American story has long been invisible—the story of people who share African American and Native American ancestry. Over centuries, African American and Native people came together, creating shared histories, communities, and ways of life. Often divided by prejudice, laws, or twists of history, African-Native Americans were united by a double heritage that is truly indivisible.

Held on the occasion of the groundbreaking exhibition IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas, this symposium aims to bring visibility to African-Native American lives and initiate a healing dialogue on African-Native American experiences for people of all backgrounds. Speakers include curators and authors Robert Keith Collins (African and Choctaw descent), Penny Gamble-Williams (Chappaquiddick Wampanoag), Angela Gonzales (Hopi), Judy Kertész, Tiya Miles, and Gabrielle Tayac (Piscataway). Lonnie G. Bunch, III, director of the Smithsonians National Museum of African American History and Culture, will deliver opening remarks, and NMAI director Kevin Gover (Pawnee) moderates.

  • If you are not an expert in DNA, then how can you effectively use it in an arguement against "Black" nativity and Native status.

The fixed mulatto race that is known as Native Americans by "White" people were acknowledged as such in a political strategy to intimidate with embellished military might.

A great number of Native lineages were never slaughtered into extinction, though many millions were truly mass-murdered, but they live on in the brainwashed and hypnotized minds of many Africans.

  • Uff. Stands Watie, Vann, etc. - were educated in Anglo schools from a young age

  • The speaker at 2:06:00 doesn't understand they dynamic at all. If you know her, have her give me a call.

  • My Great Grandmother on my mothers side is native American as well as my great grandfather having native American heritage, many of my family have lighter skin than most on my mothers side of the family and my hair is not nappy but a good grade of curly and straight. We have family pictures just as the ones in the background of the video and the DNA testing shows that I am 1/4 Creek (Seminole) and also African American. Before my Great Grandmother passed she taught me Creek and Blackfoot althou

  • I have and my family have always had the features of natives. But the land if our fathers do not lie. Look to the land. It speaks of our strength. Our dilligence. We will rise. Along with the beautiful spirit in us. Peace.

  • DNA proofs im NdN on my mom's side and my dad is NdN on his mom's side... He dad has north Africa Sudan (Nubian) dna. Mu mom's dad is French on his dad (great granddad) side... I guess I'm just a good old American

  • I'm proud to be Black American, but had a rude awakening! My mother told me about her native american history and the stealing of their children. I later visited Ghana and took pictures with many Africans there. I was the lightest, not light skin, but had the color of the NA. I asked my father about his side of the family & he also had NA on his side! I had no desire to be NA but found out otherwise.

  • @1980vince:Skip Gates, aka, white man does NOT have our people's best interest. He tried tracing his forefather's back to Africa, and came up with Ireland. He is not one of us. He's master child. So he and his white man's DNA test will not tell the truth about our people! We are the GREAT SPIRIT/YHWH children!

  • Everything about us has been invisible until the time of the end, which is now!I We now see the since of pride among the north, central, south America, and so called African Native Americans.
