OK, that answered some questions I had about magic loop, but I have a new one: why do you pull the cable out at the beginning before knitting again (about 1:40 in)? My yarn's right up against the end of both needle tips and I can happily begin knitting that way. ...I wonder if I'm doing this wrong. :-p

hi there! you need to pull up a loop in order to adjust your right hand needle to knit the stitches from the left hand needle. The same is true for the first loop created as well, in order to create space to let your needles move. hope this helps a bit :)

hi there! are you referring to how stiff/flexible your cable is when you first buy a needle? Different brands have different cords - some are very flexible while others are harder to work with due to stiffness. Sometimes you can try steaming the cord a bit to make it more flexible, but it can only do so much.

you can use judy's magic cast on to create a closed end of a tube that you knit outwards. Also, most cast on methods for toe up socks will work to create the same effect.
