This is one of the worst movie deaths ever.

@singularku These days. human rights are very much talked about and even homeless and poor and criminals are ensured they have these human rights... in Tokugawa times there was no such thing as 'human rights'' so the ones chosen to die had to die, it was their unhappy fate but not the gov't trouble. I just wonder why couldn't the gov't of those days make the things easier for former samurai to use their talents in time of peace as it used them in time of war.
-
@memmori1 but dude,we cant solve that kind of problem even today,i mean u read about unemployment rate, greece gonna bankrupt, usa in trouble etc etc etc...sometimes govt cant do anything.actually i should say often rather than sometimes...it happened in the past and it heppen today

@memmori1 a lot of time ago it was. How could the Church maintain the inquisition killing hundred thousand people and still be praised? if the people is frightened by its governors it won' t react to such things... for the japanese people at the time things had just to be like this. like a kind of "rule" thing...
-
@singularku Yes, you're right. I wonder how could the Tokugawa government so easily throw hundreds of people into poverty and misery. I don't mean moral aspects here, but it is not safe for ANY government to let its own people starve, it can result in increases in crimes, instability and even rebellion. And if peasants are mostly helpless and cannot overthrow the government, the samurai could do it because they knew how to fight. How could the shogunate live for three centuries despite all that?

@memmori1 BG of this movie is 17th century before 17th century, civil war lasted for a long time(more than 100yrs) in japan so many samurai was needed but finally peace came so samurai was not needed anymore.many of them(if not all) lost their job and became masterless samurai

@Marco141190 @Marco141190 The film shows the law is strict but it is the law; but anyway the government did a terrible thing to petty samurai leaving them with no master or clan to serve and no chance to survive. I wonder what was Ieyasu thinking when he decided to turn faithful warriors to ronin or vagabonds. We see in the movie that Motome tries to find a job but is rejected because of his samurai origins.
-
@Marco141190 I agree with ya, you've got the point.
Tetsuro Tamba's character is more than just a 'bad guy'', but anyway he was too severe in Motome's case. They just didn't gave him any chance to express himself but forced him to commit suicide rather than just let him go. If Motome's goal was just money, he'd not get them in any case, but if the Ii clan members were more lenient he could escape with his life (to die another day - probably from hunger or depression).

Amazing film, and of the greatest tragic scenes I've ever seen in a movie.
Poor boy looks almost angelic with that white ceremonial attire and handsome face.
It is so painful even for a film viewer to see him meeting such a bitter death.
Kaishaku shouldn't let him suffer for so long. It was his duty to relieve a dying man of his agonies, after all.

@memmori1 I think this scene is really terrible, on the other hand the kaishaku wanted to give a lesson to motome for not willing to die. I think he should have given an other sword.
