This footage represents the first formal documentation of bonefish in large aggregations prior to moving to deep offshore waters to spawn at night. Captured on video are unique pre-spawning behaviors such as porpoising, which is when bonefish breach the water's surface as they leave nearshore pre-spawning aggregation sites at dusk on their way to deep offshore spawning sites.
For more details on this groundbreaking research, please stay tuned for the scientific paper soon to be published in the journal Marine Biology entitled "Aggregations and offshore movements as indicators of spawning activity of bonefish (Albula vulpes) in The Bahamas (DOI: 10.1007/s00227-011-1707-6), by Andy Danylchuk (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and colleagues.
kudos to the researchers on documenting this behavior.
