http://bit.ly/wheelockcollege Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., explains the value of mentors who can keep young people out of harm's way. He was speaking after receiving an honorary degree from Wheelock College.
Charles begins by speaking about Nelson Mandela and his goal to create a democracy in Africa. Mandela once said it was "an idea for which I am prepared to die." Decades later in 1994, South Africans elected the first democratically chosen president in all of Africa. If Mandela's goal is achievable, what isn't?
Charles mentions a young woman who received one of his scholarships. She wrote him a letter thanking him for the opportunity. Charles points out that there is a huge difference between a hand out and a hand up. Only one of these inspires people to achieve their best.
