ACT II
~ Alons amis!... le veau d'or
~ Merci de la chanson

The town is celebrating. In their midst, Valentin is preoccupied with thoughts of leaving to fight in the war. He asks his friends to look after his sister Marguerite while he is away; among them is Siebel, who is in love with her. They are interrupted by Mephistopheles, who sings a blasphemous song and makes innuendos about Marguerite. This is too much for Valentin, who is roused to defend his sister and attack Mephistopheles, but his sword breaks mid-air and everyone hastily withdraws.

Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Part 1.
It debuted at the Théâtre Lyrique (Théâtre-Historique, Opèra-National, Boulevard du Temple) in Paris on March 19, 1859.

Gounod's Faust is the story of a scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly indulgences. McVicar's innovative production sets this story around the time of the Franco-Prussian War (1870) in the gothic, seamy underbelly of Paris. He characterizes Faust, performed by Roberto Alagna, as a man both torn between the theater and religion, and grappling with his own sexuality.

  • Many thanks for uploading. I saw this production at the Royal Opera on Tuesday with a different cast (Rene Pape Mestopheles, Dmitri Hvorostovsky Valentin).

Such a frisson of exaltation through Covent Garden as Hvorostovsky sang his great tune at 6.54 to 7.21! He was in great voice. Though ofcourse Keenlyside is superb too...
