The upward spiral of artificial intelligence looks set to produce machines which are cleverer and more powerful than any humans. What happens when machines can themselves create super-intelligent machines? 'The Singularity' is the name science fiction writers gave to this situation. Philosopher David Chalmers discusses the philosophical implications of this very real possibility with Nigel Warburton in this episode of the Philosophy Bites podcast.

but what if we could generate energetic consciousness in physically-created technology? we could 'draw' consciousness inwards, almost like a gravitational pull

  • A three dimensional physically comprised intelligence will never have inner-subjective experience, it will never be self aware.

Current electro-chemical models in no way account for the unified nature of conscious experience.

Please, hurry up and reconstruct the hardware of the brain so everyone can finally realize that qualitative experience is ultimately ineffable and immaterial!

The brain is but a vessel of mind, a biological medium...

Your essence is energy not matter!

  • What we don't agree on is what is the worst and what is the best scenario if machines take over. I would argue that ending all life on the planet including humans and thus end endless chain of suffering would be a very good thing indeed.

this is the definition of AI... You give a machine possibilities and it decides which one to choose, although the decision is programed (e.g. make your best or worst possible chess game) The human chess-player makes exactly the same when choosing moves, but he can't think of every possibility, so the computer is "smarter". But human players look at different factors(e.g. sacrificing pawns) in this way Kasparov won against the IBM Supercomputer

  • the highest true intelligence would probably turn out to be bio-nano tech, where humans used the storage and speed of inorganic materials to create super human augmentation capabilities. We would still be organic humans, but upgraded far beyond our current evolutionary state. Also, in a million or billion years, our brains will evolve much further. Machines are limited, as organisms are, but organic materials for whatever reason have a much more sophisticated intelligence ability. Make some cyb

  • The theory in quantum mechanics is that everything is made from bits. They are similar to 0s and 1s, but they are actually matter to us, not just numbers in a program. They are the smallest pieces of indivisible matter, one inside each Planck distance. These are bits of "information", as in computers, but different as they are physical. He said to take it seriously, but it is already taken quite seriously in physics.

  • Go ahead simulate our brains. More is to be revealed. We are merely scratching the surface of consciousness.A "shift" is on the way.

  • When you take the whole slow drive giving the fact we have never stopped looking for an end to mortality , Will humans actually reach the goal for immortal thus we then attain the Greek mythology of the Gods is this not really what drives the human race or the fact that all our invention will lead to a single point of Immortality < thus Thus there for I am will turn into there for I am for ever .

  • Computers can beat humans at chess? This is only because every single possible move has been programmed into the computer and BY HUMAN BEINGS already.

Really it's just one man beating another man while using a computer in the middle

  • excellent, some of us have always believed Kurzweil was right though personaly im enjoying Jack Sarfatti's take on it all, he is suggesting that we are surrounded by past and future horizons with the latter being responsible for dark matter/energy via FEEDBACK loops, not only this but both have singularities attached to them. the relative point is this, it is the future horizon( ultimate info.) where our/the 2d god we created resides, mm heavy shit but plausible.
