i can't change to anything other than my 1400x1050 resolution, and with a couple other cases i have also only been able to chose the native resolution. although i have only had the low res issue with faulty/wrong graphics drivers.
The current state seems to be less of a usability issue and more of a bug.
It's rarely that easy. In most cases whenever I've installed Ubuntu the screen resolution has always had a default setting of 640x480, which is initially not modifiable within System->preferences->screen resolution.
In terms of usability I'd like to see a really easy way to set the monitor resolution, which doesn't involve manually hacking xorg. For eye candy you could perhaps make it much easier to change desktop themes, maybe just by right clicking on the desktop and having a "change theme" option.
Julian is a fantastic designer and a true visionary. He is bold, thinks differently and commercially. Julian develops no-nonsense products and services that people actually want to use. I am very excited for him and can't wait to see how his ideas manifest in product. Congratulations Ubuntu on a great hire.
I am also excited about this but would have been good to get some information on his past work so we can have some kind of idea what his style is.
