  • Geez, what a battle in the stretch. Fantastic stuff. Thanks posting this, sachuista. Take care.

  • Thanks - it was a great race! I'll put a few more up soon!

  • I was a huge fan of this horse and remember that triple crown year like it was yesterday. If gary stevens moved him sooner in the preakness we would be talking about the 1995 triple crown winner thunder gulch.

  • Gary Stevens taking Julie Crone to school there. Took away her left hand whip and she couldn't change Star Standrd's lead late in the race. Star Standard was gritty all the way.

  • Probably one of the greatest racehorses in history! This guy just loves to run!

It's a shame he broke down against cigar or he would've romped that day by 15

  • So if Thunder Gulch had won the Preakness that year, would there have been a Triple Crown? Man, I hope before I die, I get to experience a Triple Crown winner. I never used to care about horse racing that much, especially as an eleven year old boy in '95, but it has slowly grown quite a bit on me over the past couple of years.

  • Whoaaaa what a champion!

Just in case no one's aware of this, D. Wayne Lukas swept the 1995 Triple Crown with two different horses. Would've been really nice if jockey Calvin Borel swept it last year :(

  • Does anyone know of a horse, besides Thunder Gulch, that won 2/3 of the Triple Crown, without winning the Preakness?

  • He finished third in that race though. Also in the Preakness that year an 80-1 Oliver's Twist a local maryland horse nearly pulled the upset of a lifetime. You need to go watch that Preakness again becuse your memory has failed you. Stevens moved Thunder Gulch first but Timber Country just ran right by him and got the better of him that day. He was moved in plenty of time though.
