It's amazing how you can get stuck in a problem, ask your spouse, and they'll offer a solution so obvious you can't believe you didn't think of it. Your spouse has a different perspective. For farmers, peer advisory groups can provide that all important outside perspective.

Elaine Froese grew up in a farm family where her parents hosted 19 trainees from all over the world. Getting someone else's perspective on their farm happened because of the international rural exchange program and IAEA (international agricultural exchange association). These young people brought labor, new life, and great energy to the farm family.

Is it time for you to travel? Go to a conference? Or find a peer network to help you find a new perspective for your farm? Farm publications, the Internet, and even AgVision are challenging you with new information to help you grow your farm business and improve your family's life. In Alberta, peer networking groups are being promoted as a great way to manage farms and ranches more strategically by meeting regularly with other farmers and ranchers. Peer networks expose and enable people to engage their peers in the industry and across industries to access more and better information and innovative perspectives on best business practices.

One rancher says his group has been meeting monthly for 19 years. And this is the reason why he can expand his successful business today. A holistic management group gave him a very gainful perspective. Another rancher in Alberta drives 90 minutes one way on a monthly basis to meet with her peer group. She says it helps her team achieve new goals and grow her business. Her commitment is rewarded by her consistent involvement and a great arena to pick up new best practices for her farm operation.

Someone once said, "Your life will be shaped by the people you meet and the books you read." Are you meeting the people who understand your business and are helping you to grow? Why not? Who do you share your deepest desires and business dreams with? Better decision making and clarity of focus are two of the main benefits of having a peer network group. Elaine belongs to the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors, also knows as CAFA. This group provides insight on whats currently affecting farmers. You can access this group as a farmer and join their regular chapter meetings all across Canada. It takes one phone call to connect, so leap at the chance for a new perspective for your farm or ranch. Join a peer network group, call CAFA, connect with an exchange program, or sign up for that Ag conference today.
