A compulsory super scheme would have made this country rich, able to invest in NZ business ventures and much better equipped to deal with the onset of baby boomer retirement (a real impending headache). Instead we got a short sighted scheme that will probably bankrupt the country. Sigh.
Wasn't "late 1970's"; 1975 general election actually. If ever an ad back-fired historically it was this one! Muldoon bagged Labour employee contributory superannuation scheme, (employees and employers contributions over time would pay for retirement). Slagged by this ad and Muldoon as "socialist". So instead Muldoon created a pension benefit at unaffordable levels and an age 60 retirement financed out of everyone's taxes; this was apparently not socialist! which of course it was.
@mkeysou812 - Indeed. But that's NZ voters for you. We really are so naive...

Opps. It would have been a good scheme to keep.
