Forced evictions in Nigeria: Port Harcourt

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOe-MRUIAcM
Short film about forced eviction in the Ngofaka-polo Waterfront community Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Njemanze and Abonnema Wharf are within the project site of a commercial entertainment project called "Silverbird Showtime". UN-HABITAT estimates that "the Silverbird Showtime project" alone will lead to land clearance affecting between 100,000 and 150,000 people.

  • Did the army or whomever is in charge of bulldozing even check first to make sure that there were no people inside?

    WTF?!?!

  • This is ungodly, why are some people so devoid of human feelings..

  • if u have ever lived in port harcourt, then u will support govt's effort to clear the town. the people are settlers on land that dosen't belong to them so govt has every right to evict them if the area is to be developed.

we should find a way to reduce the slums and not encourage their expansions.

when u live 4 house wey no be ur own u no know say the owner go come one day to take am back??

  • you carry fisher men go put for farm land. and expect them to do what ? you go create more thieves. the govt failed to develop the land mass directly opposite these water front for the people because they want ph to develop only north wards to igboland.

  • A better place has been provided for them in Etche but many have refused to relocate. The Rivers state government is trying to sanitise Port-Harcourt.

  • i only feel 4 d kids n elderly ppl affected. d nigerian state shuld find a way taking care of destitute ppl who fall in these groups

  • yea yea wateva. we don't care..d rest of d world doesn't care. these ppl n slums harbour criminals. dey were warned b4 hand bt bein nigerians dey had 2 b difficult n stubborn.

  • This area really need the renovation. Was born and raised in there. I just feel sorry for the folks with nowhere to go. The government is doing their job, change is good but the initial stage is a bitch. Take heart folks
