To put out a grease fire, you can put the pan lid on the pan to "smother" the fire (always keep the pan lid near the pan when cooking with grease or oil, just in case), or you can rinse a washcloth or small towel in water then ring it out and place it over the top of the pan (same concept), or use a fire extinguisher if it's available. Do not use flour or sugar to put out the fire, it will explode.

Water is denser than cooking grease, and therefore 'sinks' when applied. The heat from the grease then causes the water at the bottom to boil and rapidly expand ~1000 times in volume, pushing the burning grease out of the pan and onto the surroundings, including walls, towels, you!
Baking soda or a proper fire extinguisher are also good options.

that is why you should never pour water on a grease fire the only types of fires that is safe to pour water on are: trash fires,brush fires
