Lyrics to BORN IN THE U.S.A:

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said "Son, don't you understand"

I had a brother at Khe Sanh fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A

  • I remember the laugh I had when George Bush Sr used this as his theme song for his campaign in 1988 - clueless. My ultra conservative uncle thought it was the best song ever. I am sure he never figured out the words- lol :-)

  • Ronald Reagan had said in " Born in the USA" 's era that is good for the USA to have such patriots as Springsteen.....

I think that he had never heard the lyrics of the song..

By the way, I was born in Thessaloniki (Greece)!

  • Funny, this is the song that where standing #1 in the top 10 on the day i where born. Not in the usa but in holland!

  • @1OLDWAC - Yep! My 1st husband joined the Navy right out of HS in '68. Was a Seal and river boat captain in VN the next 2 years. The horrors he saw and did at such a young age are unspeakable. When he finally returned to where "he was born in the USA," he was greated with people spitting on him and calling him "baby killer." He has PTSD and it destroyed our marriage and alienated his 2 children. The true meaning of this song is lost on most people as they only focus on the chorus.

  • so hot

  • the song for us warriors with PTSD and getting screwed by the VA, and the whole effen system-thanks Bruce -you got this one right

  • How did you post this without the copyright crap taking over? I'd appreciate it, trying to upload this song as well.

  • BABE

  • @GeorgeK91 thing is, Springsteen isn't being anti patriotic, he's just stating how veterans were mistreated on their homecoming. More of a criticism of the gov't, not the country itself.. However, Ronald Reagan was definitely clueless about the meaning of the song haha.

  • Bruce could always inspire!

  • @GeorgeK91 This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. Most people thought it was a patriotic song about American pride, when it actually cast a shameful eye on how America treated its Vietnam veterans. Springsteen considers it one of his best songs, but it bothers him that it is so widely misinterpreted. With the rollicking rhythm, enthusiastic chorus, and patriotic album cover, it is easy to think this has more to do with American pride than Vietnam shame.

  • one word : FABULOUS!!!
