I recently got the Dave Smith Instruments MoPho real analog, monophonic synthesizer (serial #281), and while I'm already putting it to good use in my own music, I decided to make a demo of a well-known song to show how powerful, this very affordable analog synthesizer is.

I chose the Beverly Hills Cop theme music by Harold Faltermeyer, because it's based around synthesizers and really demonstrates the range of sounds from the MoPho - from fat, powerful basses to searing leads.

All of the sounds in this demo except for the sampled drums and a single DX-7 piano sound are from the MoPho, programmed by myself. Except for the drums and bass, all of the parts are hand-played without correction.

In my opinion, the MoPho is probably the best sounding synthesizer that's affordable for most people on the market right now. It's warm, thick but even deadly aggressive if you want it to. It even has 4 16-step sequencers ;)

MoPho part list:
- Bass
- Leads
- Chords
- Xylophone
- Hihats
- Noise pops
- Dubbed snare sound

The short E-piano sound is courtesy of the Yamaha DX-7, and the drums the LinnDrum (or rather, samples of it ;))

All in all, I hope you like the demo - if not for the music, then because of the sounds! Remember, the MoPho is a $299 instrument ;)

  • what it the best midi controller keyboard for this MoPho?

  • I can't truly say which is the best one, but I use two controller keyboards; the CME UF7 which is okayish, and the Novation XioSynth. The XioSynth has programmable knobs, and can thus control the MoPho's parameters, which is a cool feature!

  • I dont like the sounds. Sounds to digital and harsh, it even doesnt sound real analog. And I guess with a 200$ Alpha Juno you get better result of that harold faltermayer track. Just my 2 cents.

  • Well, it's rather impossible that they sound digital. However, they are definitely not stereotypical analog moog sounds, they use different filter and oscillator IC's. And i've played a Roland alpha juno-1 several times, and while it has a decent sound, i much prefer that of the MoPho. It's probably a matter of taste though.

    Merry christmas though! :)

  • first: Awesome. I love those movies.

second: Is it possible to create something resembling a piano on the Mopho? it doesn't have to be clean, since I'm going for a very sort of... broken sound. Or would I be better off getting a decent digitial Piano and run it through the Mopho as an effects box?

  • @Senj1n Ohhh, right :D

  • @bjcsupertortoise wrong 299... you just have to know where to look

  • $399 not $299 :)

  • Sounds great!

  • One of the most interesting demo from the MOPHO. Very well done. Congratulation it's a good work.

  • It actually surprisingly sounds like a Pro-One. I want a Mopho Keyboard, and a Tetra to do some Yazoo style tracks.

  • Brilliant work mate. Loving it.

  • man you know yours synths and your music , awsome !

  • Well played, arranged and programmed. Like others here, my hat's off for improving a classic.

For expressive soloing, how do you think the filter compares to i.e. a moog filter?
