WASHINGTON, DC -- Aug. 17, 2011 -- Rebuilding Together, the nation's leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, announced a special project with its Bergen County, N.J. affiliate and the Sears Heroes at Home program to restore the American Legion Post 109 in Rutherford, N.J., with Samsung Hope for Children. On Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, volunteers from Sears, Samsung and Rebuilding Together will take part in the restoration project, which will focus on accessibility modifications for veterans who use the facility.

"We're pleased to announce that once again Sears, through its Heroes at Home program, is helping us help local veterans," said Gretchen Viggiano, executive director of Rebuilding Together Bergen County. "This time they're teaming up with Samsung, and employees from both Sears and Samsung will assist on the project. The support from Sears' Heroes at Home program and Samsung will allow us to make accessibility modifications, making an incredible impact on the community, the American Legion hall and the patrons it serves."

The American Legion Post 109 is a nonprofit building facility that maintains relationships with other local organizations, including a Veterans Home in East Orange, N.J. Several times a year, the Veterans Home utilizes the hall for various events to honor the veterans and their service. The facility serves as a resource for the entire community and has more than 100 members to help provide services to the community.

To improve the facility for its members, the repairs will include demolishing the rotting wood deck, constructing a new deck with a handicapped ramp, converting the bathroom into a handicapped-accessible facility and providing electrical system maintenance. Painting and landscaping services will be provided throughout the interior and exterior of the building. In addition to Sears' cash donation for the rebuild, Samsung will donate new appliances and electronics for the staff, members and patrons of the American Legion hall. The Samsung contribution is part of its Hope for Children program, which represents the company's ongoing philanthropic commitment to help children live smarter, healthier and more sustainable lives.

Helping to make this and hundreds of rebuilds possible, the Sears Heroes at Home program has raised more than $23 million with Rebuilding Together over the past four years. The funds, which will support the restoration of more than 1,000 homes by the end of 2011, help to address a critical need for an alarming number of veterans who are struggling to make ends meet and who live in substandard housing.
