Alfred Cortot (1877-1962) was famous for his Chopin, Liszt and Schumann interpretations. The 1927 Etude came to us via a Duo Arte piano roll (DDD-CD), the 1954 Prélude is from a 78rpm disk master, again computer enhanced by me.

  • it's difficult to tell what the original tempos were on piano rolls.

nobody beats cortot for chopin adapted for modern piano.

  • You're quite correct on this. But the same is valid for the indications in the music score: many a discussion was held and the outcome varied over the years what a certain composer intended with e.g. "adagio ma non troppo". For rolls, I guess the fact that faster playing was not a technical problem for this system, while phrasing had its limits, they rather went the faster way than the slower way.

  • too, too fast..i have listened to a better version of this..i did not like this...i am not saying he played it awefully..i am saying i liked the other pianist how he performed it...just like some people prefer yundi li and/or lim...

  • There are days when Yundi Li is my favourite and others it is good old Alfred Cortot. It is the same when sitting down at the piano, my own interpretations differ acoording to my mood. See also my most recent contribution on two quite different interpretations op prélude op 28 nr 2

  • I tip my hat, that is now one of my favorite interpretations of the "'Ocean' Etude."

  • I like this one.

  • I always felt this Etude sounded like a naval battle.

  • cortot blumenfeld and heinrich neigauz were the greatest teachers of all the time!

WHAT A SOUND FROM CORTOT JUST UNBELIVABLE!

  • Top shelf! Bravo!

  • Assolutamente.

  • Very captivating and unconventional, made me think.
