David Brewster (Duke, MEM 2000), president and co-founder of EnerNOC, explains the challenges of the U.S. electric utility system -- and his company's hi-tech, smart-grid solutions to meeting them. In short, EnerNOC is essentially building an ad hoc smart grid to reduce the need for peaking (backup) power plants -- plants that make up about 10 percent of our electric utility landscape but that are only tapped 1 percent of the time.
