The first time I went to Walt Disney World at the age of 5, I assumed the Monorail was just another one of the rides you could go on just like any other ride at the Magic Kingdom or at the Epcot Center. In fact, those riding Disneys first monorail at Walt Disneyland in California in the early 1960s thought of it more as just another ride too. It wasnt until I was a little bit older that I discovered the WDW Monorail was purely for transportation purposes around the parks. This discovery did not make me enjoy riding the monorail any less; and as a matter of fact, as odd as it may sound, it is still one of my favorite rides at Walt Disney World. I dont know if its because it is such a unique way of travel, or if its because monorails are a type of train and I have always liked trains, but I have always enjoyed watching and riding the Walt Disney World Monorails.

** Please keep in mind that this video segment was made prior to the first ever monorail incident at Walt Disney World that resulted in a fatality. On July 5, 2009, 21 year old Austin Wuennenberg was killed when Monorail Pink slammed into Monorail Purple parked at the TTC (Transportation and Ticket Center the transfer point for buses and the Monorail that takes guests over to Epcot). This was a tragic accident one that hopefully never happens again. Needless to say, the monorails safety record is perhaps not as accurate now, compared to when this video was made just a few years ago. The undamaged half of Monorail Pink and Monorail Purple were used to make Monorail Teal, which made its debut in the fall of 2009. **

Even if the monorail route never expands in the future, the Walt Disney World Monorail is a modern way to get around the resorts and a few of the parks at WDW a mode of transportation pretty unique to Disney.

It's expected that the "Tron-o-rail" will return to Monorail Coral (yes, only 1 monorail [Coral] was covered in the Tron scrim) after Tron finishes its run.

  • @MrPatricio504 I didn't know that, but thank you very much for sharing that info!

  • I hope those scrape off those new paints jobs once Tron finishes it's run. I know them being white is kinda bland but why ruin a classic.

For those that didn't know:WDW gave some of the monorails a new piant job to promot the new Tron movie.

  • @cancerman50 I agree..... with that design, it's harder to tell which monorail is which. Part of what is distinctive are the different monorail colors :-)

  • This is amazing!! Im sucha disney freak!!!

  • @lexitink Thanks for the comment!

  • It might only be me, but I don't care...but I'm totally captivated by the monorail passing through the hotel lobby. I think that has some type of technical design beauty to it...merging the elegance of technology and hotel luxury together. Totally awesome!

  • @WKCHAN1985 Take my pen knife my good man!

  • you know those monorail engineers - they've all got one-track minds....

  • Thanks for posting this, I have always loved the monorail. I always asked for cab rides and they always said yes.

  • The ring came off my pudding can

  • the monorails always smelled so nice

  • @dreemaze i stayed in the Contemporary Resort last summer which is the one you are talking about, and it is truly amazing to watch the monorail glide through so quietly and gracefully.

  • Oh how I love the monorail :) Thanks so much for this video, been craving Disney world, and I can't wait until I go soon! I am actually excited to see Monorail Coral, because when I went (my first time at Disney, and I was so excited I was jumping up and down in the line to the monorail) It was the tron-o-rail. I was excited to ride that one to, but I can't wait to see monorail coral. :)

    Thanks again!

  • @tsalas08 Sorry the title says Walt Disney World Monorail.

  • @sideslide23 thats because he was talking about the very first disney monorail in California and then they talk about how it the design was changed and repourposed for Disneyworld.
