Apart from its stunning limestone cliffs, Krabi is also famous for its biodiversity. During the Krabi-Andaman Festival, which was held to mark the beginning of tourist season, canoe and kayaking to plant mangrove trees was also included in the activities. Our special reporter went along to join in the activity.
The fertility and beauty of mangrove land at Tha Lane in Khaothong sub-district in Krabi attract the eyes of visitors. This beautiful area with mangrove forests, mountains and caves, is a source of marine lives, with biodiversity. Due to the calm and spectacular scenery, the bay is famous for kayaking, one of the popular tourist activities here in Krabi. And during the Krabi-Andaman festival, held to mark the beginning of the Krabi tourist season, mangrove tree planting is included for participants who are keen on canoeing or sea kayaking. 'The tree planting activity is held to get residents and visitors involved and at the same time enjoy the kayaking at the bay. At the same time they can contribute to environmental care.' Visitors enjoy kayaking along the mangrove, going past what is called in Thai 'Susan Chaolay' or the ancient cemetery of "People of the sea" who lived here many years ago, and large and small canyons. We also enjoy the stunning unspoiled natural beauty, with the chance to observe birds, monkeys and other animals in their natural habitat bay or lagoon. 'We position ourselves so that Krabi will be top for eco-tourism where tourists feel relaxed amidst pure nature. We also set a goal that we are going towards green tourism'. Five hundred mangrove sapling trees are bred at the bay and then planted in the water or near water by volunteers who kayak to plant the trees.

The activity, which involved local residents, students and visitors, aimed at promoting environmental care awareness among members of the public. The organizer also stressed that this is the way to serve Her Majesty the Queen's wishes and care about mangrove forests in Krabi. 'Without forest we would not have fish or marine lives as they would not have places to reside and nurse'. The fertility of Tha Lane compliments the bay's perfect view as well as the local eco-tourism aims.
