I don't like the way they changed this scene to make the old man seem more personable/likable. In the book, he never says the boy was an angel... the father asks if he thought the boy was an angel but he replies with "I don't know." He was much colder in the book.

He was in his 90s already. After they parted, I suppose he just went off to die. Or he was attacked and killed by the gangs, or succumbed to the elements. If he's lucky, maybe he was able to forage for some food like he was doing before they ran into him. He wasn't a cannibal but he was already dying.
