I work part time as a Customer Service Representative at TD Bank. One of the well known more recent scams is phishing(email fraud). It involves fraudsters sending an email to a wide audience that appears to come from a reputable company in order to obtain your personal information. Though that would be a useful comment relating to this video's topic.
Aside from that, for those who are knowledgeable in computing, online banking and online purchasing can also help them from being scammed. For instance, online banking allows consumers to check up-to-date their banking transactions and purchases as well as online purchase system like PayPal allows consumers to safely use their credit card or chequing account to purchase products online.
Identity theft and scam through using phishing, fake emails and pop ups are currently some of the major issues for many consumers as well as financial institutions. Based on recent studies by various Canadian agencies, most of the incidents that happened due to consumers lack of knowledge in how computer and the web operate, which make them vulnerable for these kind of scams.
It is very true that phishing is still a major problem on the web today and it is often difficult to detect since it can be in the form of spam or pop-ups. Thus, I think that it is still best to communicate personal information via the old fashion ways such as through the phone or in person and sometimes only secure website (those with a lock icon, url with h t t p"s").
Definitely a prevalent problem in the 21st century. I recently read an article by the MSNBC regarding an American man who discovered fraudulent activity on his credit card. Afterwards he found out that someone had been using his social security number and so started calling all the major financial institutions asking if they had any accounts under his number. By the end he'd discovered that nearly 50 people were pretending to be him! - Marc N 415
this is a very useful info ...as most of the people are doing online banking now days ....its become more work on the bank side to give more security to their customer information.. its is to become a part of scam ...doing online banking through public wifi is as dangerous as giving credit card information to an unknown call center representative
