Qantas boss praises crew after mid-air drama

Flight QF-30 was en route from London to Melbourne via Hong Kong when a large hole was torn in the fuselage in front of the right wing.

The pilot decided to land in Manila and no-one was hurt.

More than 300 people who were on board the plane arrived in Melbourne today on another aircraft.

Qantas chief Geoff Dixon says an investigation is underway into the incident, but has downplayed reports the plane had a history of corrosion.

Mr Dixon has praised the efforts of the crew in landing the plane safely and says the passengers on board should also be commended.

"I think they conducted themselves very well, I'm sorry they've gone through a very frightening experience, there's no doubt about that, but everybody is safe and that is hugely important," he said.

"We are very proud of how our people reacted to this."
