Nick - I wouldn't suggest a gps watch to record top speed for that short of a distance. There is lag with the signal and it will probably give you inconsistent data. It's just too short of a distance to be reliable. It could be done, but may not mean much to you since it will probably be different every time you run.
A radar gun is the best way to accomplish that. You could also have someone ride a bike/motorcycle next to you and record it that way (non gps bike computer on the bike)

Ty - the shoe chip doesn't have to be worn, but it will probably be a bit more accurate if it is worn. They will cross talk with each other and if you lose your gps signal the shoe chip will take over and continue to record your speed and distance
Bande - yes you can see your pace while running
Meo - Typical Drawbacks with GPS. You can lose signals in tight areas (tall buildings, steep canyons etc), but so far it has been a good watch. Yes you will need the Polar Wearlink+ to get HR data.
