Obviously, I couldn't head straight back to the apartment. It was almost certain that the person they had chosen to leave the note was still somewhere nearby. I mean, it wasn't as if I frequented the park on a regular basis except to use it as a shortcut to and from classes on the days I didn't use my bike. So the way I saw it, it was safe to assume someone was watching for my reaction.
No, the apartment was out of the question if I wanted to keep it and Jeremy safe, which I did. And heading back to the school wasn't really an option either, unless I wanted to look like a coward, which I didn't. So instead, I continued walking in the direction I'd been heading when I'd found the note. When I reached the northern edge of the park, I turned east, taking an indirect route to the post office where I picked up my mail.
I got smart the last time I'd suspected that they'd gotten close. Rather than give them my forwarding address on a silver platter, I'd set up several PO Boxes at different locations, none of which used my real name. Through this system, the different areas of my life became compartmentalized; university mail through one location, online shopping and financial accounts through others. The most important information didn't come through the mail at all, but through an email account accessable only through one of two secure servers.
Though I was careful to monitor how frequently I accessed the servers, I rarely used the one at the post office. Somehow, it had always seemed too public a venue to receive such critical news. Today, however, that didn't matter. The only thing that mattered was getting word to my father... wherever he was.
