You're not suppose to stab the metal shavings to clean off the tip. You're suppose to wipe.

Actually, wiping the iron in the coils instead of stabbing can cause solder to flick back towards you. The directions specifically recommend a stabbing motion to avoid this.

Hello, I have one question. I need to use Indium solder for my project work and I need to connect very thin gold wires on a Si substrates. I just pure Indium but that is not working so should I use flux indium lead instead of pure In?
I will appreciate any help. Thanks

Use the tip, make a bridge with the solder between the tip and the component, then paint with the solder towards the other side of the component. Making a bridge increases the surface where heat can be transferred, which is the problem you try to solve by using the side of the soldering iron. Or you can do as in this video, pre-tin the tip just before you solder, as he says "tinning the tip".
If you search for the channel "pacewordwide" you will find an amazing course on soldering, it is good

I had been told not to use the tip of of the solder iron but slightly higher on the side. Is that correct?

Your soldering iron must not be getting hot enough. This can be due to oxidisation on the soldering tip or just a not hot enough soldering iron. I recommend cleaning the soldering iron regularly with a damp sponge. You should also clean it in between each connection you make with a brass sponge and tin the tip of the iron.

Bending the leads makes it only more difficult to remove the component in the future. I would go with keeping the leads straight and cutting after soldering.
