The Morely Bad Horsie Wah is Steve Vai's legendary signature wah. It is a very simple pedal to use and its very good at adapting to any amp or gain level. This one is the Bad Horsie 1, there is a bad horsie 2 but the reason I didnt get it is this one has the feature of cutting itself off when you aren't pressing on it. Which makes playing fast scales, arpeggios, tapping licks, or any other type of thing much easier to do then having to stomp down on the wah and worry about breaking it.
Another thing I've noticed is that when you click it on it gives you a slight boost in signal. It adds a little noise but to me it seems like a wah pedal plus an overdrive sort of effect. It doesnt put more volume on with the clean channel really but with the distortion it gives it an extra bite that seems like its pushing the amp some.
The tone sweep of this pedal is just great it can go from those really thick jimi hendrix sort of sounds to that wild eddy van halen sort of shrill sounds for eruption. To me it is a Steve Vai wah but its not like a signature that can only do Steve Vai. Which is a problem with a lot of signature gear I've seen as it really doesn't fit the other artists quite as well or to my ears can't be a general purpose guitar for all styles. It also can produce a jimmy page style wah sound for songs like Whole Lotta Love which this pedal really fits with. The pedal you can get used around $40-$50 on ebay.
This thing is buit like a tank. It is made out of die-cast metal there are literally no plastic pieces on this whatsoever. Even the door to put the 9V battery in is a metal door. So this thing is just extremely tough. It actually is nowhere near as heavy as your average dunlop wah pedal though. It has some weight but its not like a brick.
Vai played with alcatrazz in the mid 80's replacing yngwie malmsteen and I dont know if he developed that pedal back then or more recently. He really uses a wah effect on songs like For the Love of god, Bad Horsie, and most of his other stuff.
The reason I like it so much is that its a very strong wah sound but its not overwhelming. It sounds very vintage to me as opposed to the dunlop wah pedals that I've heard that just werent for me for whatever reason. Hard to really explain.
A good adaptor for this pedal that I use for most of my pedals as you know adaptors are so expensive is a Danelectro Zero Hum adaptor, pick it up at musiciansfriend for about 10 dollars. It works fine, most 9V adaptors will work with it but they will give you a horrible hissing sound that just ruins the sound so just stick with the original that you can buy for a small fortune or just get the lil danelectro box, either way it works.
Due to the bad sound in these videos to my ears soon i will redo these videos in HD quality, but for now this will have to do. I'm sorry for the bad audio and probably bad playing on top of that. The reviews were done around 2 AM because my parents were always in the living room and couldnt really demo it in here while they watched TV or anything. So excuse that.
