In this installment of our Linux series, we expand and further explain a concept that we mentioned briefly in an earlier video which is that of a window manager (sometimes also known as a desktop environment). The idea is similar in concept to that of the Windows Explorer or to the Finder on Mac OS X. Due to the open source nature of Linux, there are a wide range of environments from which to choose that each have advantages and disadvantages are at different stages in their development cycle. In this video we cover some of the most popular choice as well as discuss what each has to offer.

  • @iliescosmin You're kidding, right? I'm bloody POLISH, not even a native English speaker - and I understand him fine. Don't exagerate, man.

  • @iliescosmin It's not Tom's fault that he suffers cerebral palsy and can't speak more clearly. This doesn't make his tutorial less useful or enlightening, and this doesn't mean that it shouldn't have been made at all. Those that have difficulties understanding him (poor English, hearing impairment or whatever) will just need to find another way to learn, that's all. If you understand OK, then don't complain and enjoy Tom's vids. They're really great.

  • Tomrogers123:Do you use linux? And if yes what distro?

  • WTF your lips are black did you suck a dick?

  • this tutorial was quite helpful :). Thanks for making these useful videos for us linux noobs out here :P

  • @MsPwain Yes, XFCE can not make console interface obsolete. With KDE and GNOME you can live without terminal. And "lightweightness" of XFCE is something to be questioned cause it does not consume much less, yet cuts on features that are usefull.

  • LXDE or XFCE are both light weight. I have to mention though, I lost Compiz in LXDE, which is a bit irritating, and I also lost the search-field in the menu-bar of Mint Menu.

I think Compiz can run on XFCE, but I do not really like XFCE. Somehow it feels not user friendly.

  • @atmmachine11 An amusingly offensive reply to a jokeful comment. Almost as amusing as your lack of sense of humour or bad manners. Didn't your mother teach you not to use swear words?

  • hey tomrogers, when i say wine, i mean the windows program player for linux...

  • @mingos777 wine the windows program player you dumbass (sorry just had to prove you are a fucking retard)

  • Just thought I'd mention that aqua is actually the window manager in OSX. Keep up the good work mate.

  • @atmmachine11 I don't use wine, I find whisky more effective. (sorry, I just needed to make that comment ;))
