Jay Coen Gilbert of B Lab and Michelle Long of BALLE discuss different strategies to sustainability at the SVN Spring Member Gathering.
There's no questioning the urgency of our times. From climate change, wealth inequality, rapid corporate globalization, the end of cheap oil and the prospect of endless war over dwindling resources, our current economic system is unsustainable. But what's the fastest path to achieve SVN's mission to build a just economy and sustainable planet? Is it to reform our current economic and corporate systems and then grow progressive companies as big and as fast as possible? Or is it to build an alternative economic system based on de-centralized local ownership, regional self-reliance, and cooperation? While we don't expect to "solve" a debate tonight, we do expect to launch a critical conversation amongst the thought leaders who make up the Social Venture Network. Come with your ideas -- as well as a willingness to be changed by others' ideas.
the Wendell Berry quote is great...and dead on - ego, ambition and justifying oneself seems to be a huge problem...
but yeah - can we build an ecosystem of business/andor social models that are inter-supportive... patterned and deployable...

i'm not sure it's necessary to pit these two points of view against each other - both/and --- we need to get to a place beyond this tit for tat way of looking at the problems...
