The purpose of this tutorial is to show how to unwrap a globe into two hemispheres. This tutorial is based on the UV Map Basics Tutorial, in the Blender 3D: Noob To Pro wikibook, at http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/UV_Map_Basics. The text for this video is at blender3dvideos.blogspot.com, the Web site for my tutorials.

Why do we need this tutorial? The reason: UV Mapping was introduced way back in Blender 2.34 and has been extensively rewritten since then. The user interface, and many terms, have changed over time. As examples, UV Face Select mode disappeared in Blender 2.46, and the term LSCM (Least Squares Conformal Mapping) was used up until then. Now LSCM is simply called Unwrap. Many unwrapping tutorials were based on earlier versions. If you try to follow along in the current version, 2.49b, you can get confused. Hopefully, this video will help to show the steps to successful UV Unwrapping in the version most of us use.

  • how do i "box select"?

  • @Nosh5 In Edit mode, press the B key, then left click and drag. You're creating a rectanglular selection of the vertices. When finished, release the left mouse button.

  • good tutorial! i made one about unwrapping recently, but this one is more in-depth... :D

  • @BlenderMeshWeaver I watched it and clicked on Like. Your tutorials are very clear.

  • Thanks for that. Good job

  • @MultiPadster You're quite welcome. I'm thinking of creating a book (printed and/or ebook) out of the scripts for all my tutorials and charging $25. Would you buy it?

  • You are so helpful ty. I finally got it to work.

  • Fantastic tutorial! Also cheers for a couple of useful shortcuts!

  • probably the greatest unwrap in the world !

  • thank you for doing this tutorial. it's very well done. it's also great that you used gimp for image editing. :)

  • Thanks for the tutorial, I'd just like to suggest that something be done about the volume, I had my speakers turned all of the way up and still couldn't make out what you were saying, had to put on my headphones then with them maxed you sounded like a normal volume. I've noticed a lot of YouTube videos seem to have a volume issue, not all, but a lot.

  • @Nosh5 B

  • "The Gimp" lol, it's just called Gimp.

  • @irakrakow maybe if you covered all avenues of texturing and uv mapping ....I dont use blender for modeling or uv mapping or texturing. I use Silo 3d(For Modeling) Paint.net or Gimp(Painting (including the painting of images to the uv map) and Messiah(For animation). Sadly i dont have Cinema 4d at present! One last tool i need to buy is 3d coat for auto uv mapping plus painting I cant wait till PTEX is fully here. No need for uv mapping anymore. 3d coat supports PTEX painting (images or colors).

  • finally a tut which describes using images and the paint program to texture map an object. I am doing a character rather than a globe. One question is it possible to add multiple images to different parts of the uv map? for example one image for feet and another for the body etc.....
