part 4 of the clues and files needed to Eliminate the Impossible (part 3 can be found on the website eliminatetheimpossible.com if you can solve the mysteries)
this film shows the processing of the first note book page found to have hidden handwritten notes beneath gouache (water soluble paint). The secret notes were written in iron gall ink, an archaic medium to say the least, but which is not water soluble. As the paint is washed off, one can clearly see not only the cursive handwriting, but also the hidden images of skulls in the stone walls: these place the images in northernmost Shetland, on the island of Unst, the artist's home at the time (purported to be among the most haunted places in the UK).

transcript:
look at this painting: You can see the old mans handwriting, coming through! Weve got pages and pages of these notes, but the first one is already legible. Maybe you better sit down first)
This is actually pretty heavy stuff, I should warn you. Its written in iron gall ink, and its quite water-proof. Why in the name of god someone would use a medieval ink in 1946 is beyond me, but it sure makes it easy to wash off the paint. Alright, are you ready?
