To serve means to make ones own talents available for the benefit of others. This is what Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said on November 25th at Romes Pontifical Lateran University, during the presentation of his new book called Servire la giustizia e la pace (At the Service of Justice and Peace). Service is not an ugly word, [it does not mean] being subject to others; it is a very noble word because it means making ones own talents available for the benefit of others. When performing my duties, I am not just helpful to myself, but to society as well. Therefore, whatever we do -- especially politicians and administrators -- we must do with a spirit of serving others. Commenting on the title of his new book, Cardinal Martino described how we can promote justice and peace:Dialogue is essential; that is, we must not close ourselves within our positions and not acknowledge that someone else can contribute, with their efforts and in dialogue, to make the world a better place, and thus to achieve justice and peace.
