Bernalillo County authorities say they discovered dozens of dead and decomposing animals including a rhinoceros at a South Valley home.
The dead animals apparently were taken there by a licensed contractor who was supposed to dispose of them at the Cerro Colorado Landfill owned by the city of Albuquerque.
The contractor told authorities that he had simply gotten behind in his work because he was caring for a sick family member.
The county environmental health manager is requiring that the animals be removed within 24 hours. The contractor could face legal proceedings.
The dead animals are outside the house. The rhinoceros ended up there after having died at the Rio Grande Zoo in December. The dead rhino had been taken by the state Department of Agriculture, which later hired the contractor to dispose of the remains.
